Why the Deck is the Most Important Part of the Skateboard

If you think that the truck or the wheels are more important, consider this small experiment. Disassemble your skateboard, and try to use your deck without the trucks. Indeed, you can do a lot of stuff with the deck alone. In fact, you can even do sand surfing with your deck, and you can do so like a pro! On the other hand, you can do little with your wheels or trucks. Will you be able to do tricks like the kickflip, or pop-shove-it with nothing more than these rolling parts? Of course, you cannot.

The thing is, the deck is the largest part of the skateboard, and whatever you do to it becomes immediately obvious to the people around you. Now, since skateboarders consider their skateboards as being connected with their souls, the deck is the most ideal part where the boarder can make a statement which can be seen and understood by others. In a metaphorical sense, the deck is the skateboarders’ window to his soul. Indeed, skateboarders are seldom vocal people. Skateboarders speak with their craft, with their kickflips and backflips, and, of course, with the design of their decks.

Basically, skateboard decks are made in an assortment of shapes and sizes. After all, they are made for all types of people – for the big or small, short or tall. However, there is really no general rule in choosing the kind of deck that you need. If you are a newcomer to the world of skateboarding, it would do you a lot of good to ask the personal preferences of more veteran skateboarders. Basically, they will tell you that the width of the deck would depend on the size of your feet, and that decks with thinner bodies are most ideal in carrying out tricks. At the same time, they will tell you to try them all. As a newbie, you need to stick with what makes you comfortable.
